“Kill switch”: “Block this browser’s traffic if the VPN drops”

A kill switch for the browser

Turn it on, and if the VPN drops, CopVPN blocks this browser’s traffic rather than letting it leave outside the VPN. It covers Chrome only; the desktop apps have their own kill switch.

Questions

Questions about the Chrome extension

Does the Chrome extension protect my whole computer?

No. It protects this browser only: Chrome’s traffic is encrypted between your browser and CopVPN. Other apps and browsers on the computer aren’t covered. For the whole computer, install the CopVPN app for Windows, Mac or Linux.

Do I need a plan to use CopVPN in Chrome?

No. Without a plan, the extension connects to the free locations, and the kill switch, auto-connect, bypass list and ad blocking all work. A plan opens every location, in the extension and in every CopVPN app you sign in to with the same account.

Which version of Chrome do I need?

Chrome 116 or later. Add CopVPN from the Chrome Web Store, then pin it next to the address bar from Chrome’s Extensions menu.

Can I choose a protocol in the extension?

No. The extension uses one protocol, “Secure Proxy”, with no picker. The CopVPN apps have 5 protocols: WireGuard, OpenVPN UDP, OpenVPN TCP, AmneziaWG and Stealth.

What does the bypass list do?

The “Bypass list” holds “Sites that skip the VPN”: up to 100 sites, subdomains included. They load outside the VPN while the rest of the browser stays protected.

Is there a kill switch in the Chrome extension?

Yes. The “Kill switch” setting reads “Block this browser’s traffic if the VPN drops”. It’s off until you turn it on in Settings, it works without a plan, and it covers Chrome only.

Does ad blocking work when I’m not connected?

Yes. “Block ads, trackers & malware” works whether or not you’re connected, and without a plan. It blocks known ad, tracking and malware sites; it doesn’t scan files and isn’t antivirus.

How do I sign in?

There’s no password. Sign in with your email and a 6-digit code, or with Apple or Google. One account works on unlimited devices, up to 7 connected at once.
